2017

chicago, Illinois

In June 2017, Trade Winds partnered with Chicago-based organizations RefugeeOne and The People's Music School to offer two weeks of free music and arts workshops. Our classes mirrored the curriculum we used in East Africa, focusing on our students' growth in confidence, self-expression, and composition. With the use of digital keyboards, solfege, and—in some cases—their own instruments, students were invited to compose short cells based on Terry Riley’s “In C”, as well as original scores using graphic notation based on John Cage’s “Aria”. We continue to give weekly performances at RefugeeOne during the school year, featuring guest musicians from around Chicago.

Chicago Team: Brian Gnojek, Suzanne Hannau, Ellen Hindson, Brandon Scott Rumsey, Jamie Sanborn, and Midori Samson.
